SOD GRASS FAQS

  • What is Sod?

Sod is a section of grass that is cut or torn from the surface of grassland, containing the matted roots of grass. Yes, Sod is actually real grass, and not a fake imitation. If maintained properly, Sod will take root in the soil and will grow roughly the same as any other normal lawn (all depending on the type of Sod used).

  • How do you maintain Sod?

In the long run, Sod is much easier to maintain than any other lawn type. In a climate such as Louisiana’s, after the first month, a Sod lawn needs little to no maintenance.

Proper watering of Sod is essential for root establishment. On the day of installation, enough water should be applied to penetrate the Sod along with two inches of native soil. From the second day onward, you should make sure that the Sod and soil are both moist throughout the day, but not wet to the point where the native soil is soggy.

In a climate such as Louisiana's, manual watering is not necessary. Mowing is the same as if working on a conventional lawn (depending on the type of Sod used). Fertilize at least annually, or according to the specific needs of your lawn. Aerate every other year to increase water and air exchange at the root level.

  • Is seeding cheaper than laying down Sod?

Covering your yard with grass seed is cheaper than covering it with Sod, but in comparision, Sod is the more efficient option. When we lay Sod, we are laying down a finished product that will provide nearly instant use, beauty, and environmental benefits. On the other hand, there are many unknown factors and variables, in Grass seed, that could delay or even prevent your yard from reaching its full potential. Planting grass seed could require two or more years of on-going time, attention, water, fertilizer, and pesticides to reach a maturity equal to Sod on its first day.
